Lighter, Easier-to-Hold Garden Hand Tools: What the Specs Say

A trowel you use for an hour should feel good in your hand. Below are a few hand tools whose makers list their weight, size and handle design, so you can compare before you buy. We haven't tested these ourselves; every fact comes from the seller's own page, checked on October 24, 2026. Prices change often, so check the page before you buy.

What to look for

Radius Garden ergonomic tools (round grip, aluminum blades)

Radius Garden's tools use what it calls a Natural Radius Grip, which the company says "minimizes hand and wrist stress while maximizing power and comfort." That's the maker's claim, not something we measured. The blades are die-cast aluminum with a polypropylene handle.

Gardener's Supply Lifetime tools (forged steel, ash handles)

These are hand-forged in Holland by DeWit from high-carbon boron steel with European ash handles, and Gardener's Supply backs them with a lifetime guarantee. They're built for strength rather than light weight, and the pages we checked list a weight for only one of them.

Keep them close

Fewer trips back to the shed means less walking and bending. Gardener's Supply's Cross Body Tool Bag is laminated cotton canvas, 12.5" x 12" x 1.5", and was listed at $44.99 (10% off $49.99) when we checked; one of its two colors showed as sold out. A garden stool with storage is another option; see our guide to garden stools and rolling seats.

If your hands get sore or stiff when you garden, it's worth asking your doctor or a hand therapist what would help. We can only share what makers say about their tools.
