Stand-Up Weeders and Long-Handled Hoes: Weeding Without Kneeling

If getting down on the ground to weed has become the hardest part of gardening, a long-handled tool lets you do much of it standing up. There are two main kinds: claw weed pullers, which lift a weed out by the root, and long-handled hoes, which slice weeds off just under the soil. We haven't tested these ourselves; every fact below comes from the seller's own page, checked on October 26, 2026. Prices change often, so check the page before you buy.

Claw weed pullers

These have claws at the bottom and a foot pad. You center the tool over a weed, step down, then tip the handle to pull the weed out. They suit weeds with a single main root, such as dandelions, more than spreading grasses.

Long-handled hoes

A hoe doesn't pull roots, but it lets you clear small weeds across a whole bed while standing straight. These three are hand-forged in Holland for Gardener's Supply, with ash wood handles and a lifetime guarantee.

Which kind fits you?

If your weeds are mostly dandelions and other single-root weeds in a lawn or bed, a claw puller is built for that job, and the sellers' pages for both pullers point to moist or softer soil for the best results. If you're keeping a vegetable or raised bed clear of small weeds, a long-handled hoe covers more ground. Lighter is usually easier to carry around, so compare the weights above.
